Help with Query through ODBC/Hive

Hi,

 

I have a connection to our datalake via ODBC (hortonworks). This works great, I can see all the tables/schemes that I have been given access to etc.

 

I had some changes to come of the tables and our IT dept. wrote a query to me (believe its SQL), I can execute this query with no problem if I access the server through the HUE interface. BUt I'm not sure how I connect/execute this query in powerBI?

 

I want to be able to use this along with the other tables/schemes i pull from the datalake

Data refresh using excel source on sharepoint

Hello all,

 

I connect Power BI desktop with excel data source which is placed on a SharePoint. When I upload the visualization on power BI app, the data does not automatically get refreshed when any changes are made to this excel. 

 

When I looked into the data gateway settings, it shows that this type of connection does not need any data gateway but gives me an error. See below screen-print.  Am I missing anything? Any help will be appreciated.

Based on your screenshots, your files differ in same fashion.  From what i can see you need to remove the top X rows, but X is different in each file.  You might find you have to deal with each file individually to hand code the required transformations.

Based on the error message there would be 2 things that need to be fixed:

 

  1. Its showing that there is a problem with the credentials.  Just below where the screen cuts off, you should see a link for  "Edit Credentials".  If these are your personal credentials, you will need to update this everytime your password changes.
  2. Setting up a refresh schedule is also required.  Connect directly is simply the method of how you will connect, but the schedule is when it will refresh and how often.

Changing Data Sources(OneDrive Excel and XML) and data credentials not reflecting

Hello,

 

I have some existing PowerBi models/reports running in the service and accessing XML and excel files on Onedrive through a personal gateway.

 

I have developed a new model/report using the same files on my laptop.   If I change the data sources of these files to match the other models/reports and publish, the service is saying I need the data credentials updates, HOWEVER, it is howing the paths for the local laptop, not what I updated the data source settings to before publishing.

 

Any ideas?

It doesn't support to write SQL statement via M or UI when using Impala connector, about this issue, you can submit a feature request in Power BI ideas forum.

Uisng the ODBC connector in Power BI Desktop, you can input the query into SQL Statement textbox.

Do you grant the users access to the report in Power BI Service? If the report exists in APP workspace, you would need to add users as members of the APP workspace.

Do you use the same user account and credential to connect to SQL in Power BI Desktop and gateway? If so, are you able to connect to SQL Server from SQL Server Management Studio(SSMS) with this user? Please makke sure SSMS is installed in the same machine with gateway.

Firstly, you are able to connect to different sources in a single PBIX file.

Secondly, you can connect to Excel file in Power BI Desktop following the guide in the article when you put Excel in OneDrive for business.

Thirdly, after you publish PBIX file to Power BI Service, you are able to connect to the dataset from Excel using "Analyze in Excel" feature.

Google Analytics Request failed (403) Error

I am getting below error while trying to connect google analytics from Power BI , I could able to connect it before and did not have any problem , but now starting to get the below error 

 

GoogleAnalytics: Request failed (403): Daily Limit Exceeded. The quota will be reset at midnight Pacific Time (PT). You may monitor your quota usage and adjust limits in the API Console:

Hey , thanks for your help !

No we use pgcrypto and try to decrypt PBEwith MD5 & DES but we can't via SQL it says :

 

ERROR: Unsupported cipher algorithm
********** Error **********

ERROR: Unsupported cipher algorithm
SQL state: 39000

 

We don't understand why but it feels like we will have to change encryption...

Also getting this error inconsistently, frustrating! I can see there are other questions on this error in the past year but no one had a solution. Apparently the Power BI team were not able to replicate the error either. Would like an answer on this please team.

Thanks for your reply!

My question is not really concerning getting up that measure that I used as an example, but about how to establish a relationship between these tables. In reality these tables have thousands and thousands of lines and I need to be able to make counts, measures, etc. appear by themselves as soon as I filter. And to do that the tables need to have relationships between them. :-)

Connecting to Yahoo via Yahoo ID login - Anyone have success with Fantasy Sports?

I'm sure there are much higher priority questions, but I thought I'd ask the community... Smiley Happy 

 

I'm trying to practice my power bi skills and experiment a bit in a fun, non-work scenario: my fantasy baseball league. I've had some success pulling data in from public sites, but not yet from my private yahoo league. 

 

I'm trying to connect to pull data (stats, standings, etc) from my private league to model along with other public data. 

 

The trouble I encounter is that my yahoo credentials don't seem to connect under the "Basic" permissions option for logging-in to my account and retreiving the data. 

 

I know some of the public Yahoo Finance data has changed in recent years, making it more difficult to pull from the web. Has anyone else tried to login to a private fantasy sports league on yahoo? Better yet, has anyone had any success?

More Holistic / Company Approach to Report Access

I'm wondering if there is a more holistic approach to a company-wide roles/permissions setup in Power BI. For example if I have several reports that a particular group of people need to see it is reundant to setup the same roles and security for those multiple reports. 

 

Am I misunderstanding how roles/permissions can work? I have a single table in my database that I then I have to pull into multiple reports, but within each report I need to setup either a disctinctive (and redundant role) and tie this table with RLS as well. The approach is both time-consuming, confusing, and inefficient. 

 

Any thoughts on what I might be misssing or how this might be streamlined at a more global level?
