 First, I assume you have SSAS installed and the user you are trying to connect with has permissions on the instance.

Second, have you tried to create a seperate new data source for the SSAS connection instead of changing the source type on the existing one? My initial guess is that something is cached with that connection that is causing issues if you try to flip the connection type.
